Requires Teacher role
iLearn's gradebook allows teachers to import grades using a CSV file. The file needs to have a header row and contain a unique identifier (9 digit SF State ID or SF State email) for each student.
The import process is able to create new grade items directly in the gradebook if they do not exist, or update existing gradebook items.
Note: If you choose to let the import process create the grade items in your gradebook, the maximum points will default to 100. If your imported grades are not out of 100 points, we recommend creating the grade item first before importing.
Note: Most spreadsheet software allows export from the native file type (.xlsx for Microsoft Excel, for example) to CSV, usually through the Save as... dialog box. Make sure to export as CSV, or the import will not work!
SFSU ID | Grade Item 1 | Grade Item 2 |
---|---|---|
000000000 | 50 | 75 |
000000001 | 85 | 90 |
Using the above table as the example spreadsheet:
- From the course page, in the left side drawer, select Grades.
- Select the Import tab.
- In the File box, drag and drop your CSV file, or select Browse... (or Choose a file...) to browse for the file on your computer.
- Select the Upload grades button.
- In the Map from drop down menu, select the column that has your unique identifier for students in your spreadsheet. In the example spreadsheet above, the column would be SFSU ID.
- In the Map to drop down menu, select Username.
Note: In iLearn terms, the 9 digit SF State ID number is equivalent to username in the Map to drop down menu.
Note: If you are using SFSU email as your unique identifier, make sure you select email from the Map to drop down menu instead.
- In the Grade items mapping section, the text on the left indicates the columns in your spreadsheet, and the drop down menus on the right indicate what item in the gradebook you wish to upload them to. Using our example spreadsheet, you should have an option for SFSU ID, Grade Item 1, and Grade Item 2. To create a new grade item during the import process, select New grade item. For any item that already exists, select the item from the drop down menu. For any column in the spreadsheet that you do not want to do anything with (for example, the column containing the student's ID), set or leave the drop down menu at Ignore.
- Select the Upload grades button.
