iLearn offers a variety of question types for teachers to use on a quiz. This guide will go over the most commonly used question types (Multiple choice, Essay & True / False) but teachers may experiment with different questions types if desired. It is highly recommended teachers create question categories before creating questions as that will assist in the organization of your question bank and will be referenced in the below steps.

Multiple choice - A question that will prompt students to select an answer from a pre-defined list. This question type is automatically graded by iLearn based on the correct answer inputted by the teacher.

Essay - A question that will prompt students to enter a free-form response into a text entry field. This question type must be manually graded by the teacher.

True / False - A question that will prompt students to select either 'True' or 'False'. This question type is automatically graded by iLearn based on the correct answer inputted by the teacher.

Create a question

1. From the course page, in the upper right corner, select the Edit icon (⚙) and select More...
2. On the Course administration tab, in the Question bank section, select Questions.
3. Select the Create a new question button.
4. Select the desired question type and select the Add button.
5. In the Category field, select the question category you created previously. If you did not previously create a question category, select the course name.
6. In the Question name field, enter a nickname for the question. This name is used by the teacher to quickly identify which question they are selecting when adding questions to a quiz. This nickname should be short but descriptive. We do NOT recommend entering names such as "Question #1". This name will not be visible to students.
7. In the Question text field, enter the question you would like your students to answer.
8. Select the Save changes button.

Additional fields

Default points - The default point value the question will be worth and can be graded out of. If you are unsure of how much you plan to grade the question of, we recommend leaving it at its default (one). You can later edit this on a per quiz basis on the Edit quiz page.

General Feedback - Available on most question types. Is feedback given to students regardless of what the student answered. You can use the general feedback to give students a fully worked answer and perhaps a link to more information they can use if they did not understand the question.

Feedback - Available on certain question types that are automatically graded by iLearn (ex: multiple choice). Is feedback given to students based on what answer they selected. Teachers may enter different feedback for each answer choice. This feedback is referred to as Specific feedback in the Review options section of a quiz's settings.

Response Template - Available on Essay questions. Teachers may enter a text template that will be inputted by default into students' responses. This is useful when the teacher would like students' answers to be formatted in a certain way.
