iLearn includes a feature designed to help students keep track of what they have and have not completed in a course. Once enabled, each activity can be configured by the instructor with completion criteria that determines how that specific activity is marked as complete.
Note: Activity completion has no interaction with grades and is intended as a feature to help students keep track of their progress through a class. It is not possible to grade based on activity completion in any way.
It is possible to use activity completion in combination with Restrict Access to create more complex scenarios in your course where students are required to complete activities before they gain access to subsequent activities. You can find out how to set up this feature in the restrict access guide.
Table of contents
To enable activity completion
- From the gear wheel menu on the main page of the course, select Edit settings
- Scroll down to the Completion tracking section and set Enable completion tracking to Yes
- Select Save and display
Adding completion criteria to your activities
Once you've enabled activity completion, you will see an Activity completion set of settings added to every new resource and activity you add. You will need to set a completion criteria for each activity you want to track. Different activities have different criteria that can be enabled specific to that type of activity.
Common to every activity or resource is a setting called Completion tracking that allows you to determine how completion is going to be tracked for this resource or activity.
- Do not indicate activity completion
- Activity completion will not be tracked for this resource or activity
- Students can manually mark the activity as completed
- Instead of tracking a condition, students can manually mark something as completed.
- Show activity as complete when conditions are met
- Set completion criteria that must be met in the activity or resource before something is marked as completed. Every activity and resource has different possible conditions for completion
Note: While every activity type and resource has an activity completion set of settings, indicating activity completion may not make sense in all cases such as ongoing activities like attendance.
Note: When enabling completion, there's a field for Expect completion on with a date. This is NOT a due date and does not have any bearing on whether a student can continue to interact with the activity or not. The only thing the expected completion date setting does is allow the instructor to see if a student is making the expected level of progress through a course on the activity completion report.
