After importing from iLearn into Canvas, there will be some noticeable changes that you may want to give extra attention to. Given that they are two different learning management systems, Canvas will automatically convert your iLearn content into an equivalent item or activity. This behavior can make it difficult to locate your course content in Canvas, so in the video below, you can learn where to find specific content after it has been imported from iLearn.
Note: If you want to move your iLearn content over into a Canvas course, you will need to import the content by following the iLearn to Canvas import guide.

Post-Import Checklist
This is a checklist of items to review after importing your content from iLearn.
Date and time settings
While import attempts to adjust dates and times correctly, dates may not be 100% what you expect. Double-check any activities that have open and close dates to make sure the dates and times match what you want them to be.
Visibility
Items may bring over the visibility settings from iLearn (Canvas calls this "publishing"). Check to make sure items that should be visible to students are published (green check mark), and items that should be hidden are unpublished (gray no symbol).
Quiz and quiz questions
Not every quiz question type is supported by Canvas. You can find more information in this guide. Briefly, the question types that are not supported are any of the drag and drop types, CLOZE, and Missing Words. After importing it is very important to double-check your quizzes to make sure what is and isn't there, as well as making sure question settings match what you expect, as Canvas does not support all of the esoteric quiz features that iLearn does.
Grades and grade settings
Canvas does not support scales or any non-numeric grades. All imported items that can be graded need to be checked for point value settings as anything that was imported with a scale or other non-numeric grading from iLearn may default to being worth 100 points within Canvas.
Gradebook settings will need to be completely redone in Canvas as the Canvas gradebook is much more simplistic and does not support all of the features that the iLearn gradebook does.
Setting a "Home Page" in Canvas
By default, Canvas will automatically set your course Home page as the Modules area. This means that the first area students will see upon launching your Canvas course will be the list of modules. Since modules have several limitations, we recommend creating a unique Page, and then, setting it to be your course Home page.
To set a custom home page follow these instructions:
- Navigate to your Canvas course.
- Select the Pages link from the left course navigation menu.
- Find the page you would like to use as your Home page, then select the three dots directly to the right of it.
- Select Use as Front Page from the menu.
- Select Home from the left navigation menu.
- On the right context menu, select Choose Home Page.
- Select Pages Front Page, then select Save.
After saving, Canvas will automatically change your home page. Now, whenever you select Home from the left navigation menu, Canvas will launch your custom page instead of the list of modules.
Modules versus Pages
Here is a breakdown of the differences and similarities between a page and a module within Canvas.
How to add content to your Canvas course
There are two main ways to add content to your Canvas course.
Method 1: Adding content to a module.
- Navigate to your Canvas course.
- Select the Modules link from the left menu.
- Select the + icon directly to the right of the title of a module. If you have no modules in your course, you will need to click the +Module button on the top left to create a module.
- In the pop-up box, select the top Add drop-down menu.
- Choose the type of item you want to add to that specific module from the add menu.
- Select either [ Create ___ ] or an existing item from the box below.
- Select Add item.
This will add that item to the bottom of that specific module.
Method 2: Adding content through links on the left course navigation menu.
- Navigate to your Canvas course.
- Select either the Announcements, Assignments, Discussions, Pages, or Quizzes link from the left navigation menu.
- Select the purple + "Assignment" button in the top right corner.
After creating an item through any of those links, you can then add that item to a module.
