Enabling Native Recording Feature in Discussions
AnsweredI'm wanting students to be able to record a video directly into their discussion posts using the rich text editor. Canvas support tells me that's normally a feature but SFSU has it disabled. Are there plans to enable that feature anytime soon? I realize students can record a video elsewhere and upload it via Mediasite, but I'm hoping to simplify the process for them so they can record directly from the discussion (like they can in Padlet). Any tips?

This feature will not be enabled in Canvas for two reasons: accessibility and storage costs.
The built-in media tools in Canvas cannot connect with the campus captioning service and as such uploading media directly to Canvas either via file upload or directly recording has been disabled. The other issue is file storage. As Canvas is a paid service not hosted on campus, we have limits as to how much data we can store. Each student has a very small storage size limit as a result.
We are planning on integrating iLearn video into Canvas over the course of the summer, and this will be the preferred method for students to upload video into Canvas. We are also investigating the ability to record directly to iLearn video, but that project will have to wait until after we've done the full integration.
