How do I mark a student excused in the Attendance module?

How do I mark a student excused in the Attendance module? Attendance is part of the students' participation grade, so we make Present and Excused worth the same amount of points. We also add a note as to why the student is excused (covid, car trouble, etc.)

I am not seeing an option for Excused in the Canvas attendance module.

  Roll Call, the attendance module in Canvas, does not have a concept of "excused". The only statuses possible are Present, Late, Absent and unmarked. If you're actively using attendance for grading purposes, I'd mark them as Present as the others will impact their grade.

  I read you were able to add a role to Canvas, so I was hoping you have access to fix the Attendance module as well. Sounds like no.

  Roles are one of the few things Canvas does let us configure, though the options given in roles are also fairly limited.

  The Roll Call feature is totally black box, there's no configuration for this tool at all.
