This document applies to students that are enrolled in a course (e.g. ENGR212) for which the instructor has requested Linux Course Server access.
Requirements:
- Enrollment in an eligible course
- If connecting from off-campus, you must connect to the VPN (see Part One below)
- Connect to the Linux Course Server via PuTTy or equivalent SSH client (see Part Two below)
Part One
You must connect to the VPN prior to accessing the Linux Course Server.
A. Download and install GlobalProtect VPN:
1. On a web browser, go to https://gp-students.sfsu.edu
2. Enter your SF State ID and password, then click Login.
3. Click on the download link for your system
5. Go to your 'Downloads' folder and run the installer for GlobalProtect agent.
B. Logging in to the GlobalProtect VPN:
1. Launch GlobalProtect
2. In the Portal Address box, type in "gp-students.sfsu.edu" (without the quotes) and click Connect.
3. Enter your SF State ID and password, then click Login.
4. The globe icon will have checkmark once you are properly connected.

Part Two
Connect to the Linux Course Server via SSH.
Mac User:
- Open up Finder and select Applications, double click on the Utilities folder and select Terminal
- Type in the SSH command followed by your 9-digit SF State ID number and the control node hostname
- For example: ssh 912345678@engr-lx.rcc.at.sfsu.edu
- Replace the 9-digit ID with your SFSU ID number and the hostname of the cluster. Once you’re done hit enter
- When prompted, type in your SF State password
Windows User:
- If you do not already have an SSH client installed on your Windows machine, you can install Putty using the following link: https://www.putty.org/
Once the client is installed, open the application and, in the Host Name field enter: engr-lx.rcc.at.sfsu.edu
- Select Open
Your first time logging-in you will be prompted for a host key. Click the Accept button:
At the login prompt, type in your 9-digit SFSU ID number and then hit Enter/Return, then type in your SF State password:
- Once logged-in, you will see the welcome message:
