The name displayed in Canvas and other SF State services is controlled by what you have listed for your preferred name on record. If you would like a different name to appear in Canvas, you must update your preferred name. This change may take up to 24 hours from the time you make the change to be reflected in campus services. Note that you do not have to change your legal name or your official name on record, as preferred name is a completely separate field.
Students
- Log in to the SFSU Gateway - gateway.sfsu.edu
- In the launchpad, select the Student Center button.
- In the Personal Information section, select the Names link.
- If you have a Preferred name option already, select the Edit option to change your name. If you do not have a preferred name option, select to add a new name and select Preferred name as the name type.
Staff/Faculty
- Log in to the SFSU Gateway - gateway.sfsu.edu
- In the launchpad, select the HR Self Service button.
- Select the My Personal Information link.
- Select the My Names link.
- If you have a Preferred name option already, select the Edit option to change your name. If you do not have a preferred name option, select to add a new name and select Preferred name as the name type.
