In Canvas, instructors have the ability to drop the lowest scores of a specific assignment group. For example, an instructor could have a total of five quizzes, and instead of having all five count towards the final grade, they can tell Canvas to drop the lowest score from that group of quizzes.
To drop the lowest scores, the first step is to create Assignment Groups in your Canvas course.
- Log in to Canvas.
- Navigate to your course in Canvas.
- Select Assignments from the left-side course navigation menu.
- On the Assignments page, select the +Group button in the top right corner.
- Enter a name for the Assignment Group in the box next to Group Name.
- Select Save.
- The group will then appear at the bottom of the Assignments page. Drag and drop any assignments that belong to the group by using the 8 dots to the left of the specific assignment.
Once you have created Assignment Groups, you can then tell Canvas to drop the lowest or keep the highest scores in a specific group.
- Select Assignments from the left-side course navigation menu.
- Find the assignment group that you wish to drop the lowest or keep the highest scores. Select the three dots directly to the right of the group name.
- On the drop-down menu, select Edit.
- In the second section called Number of scores to ignore for each student, enter the number of assignments/activities you wish to drop or keep from this group.
- Select Save.
Canvas will then drop the number of lowest scores or keep the highest scores from that specific assignment group. You can confirm that the changes have been saved by a rule appearing on the right side of your Assignment Group name.
Repeat this process for each assignment group that you wish to either drop the lowest scores or keep the highest scores.
