Requires Teacher Role.
By default, the Canvas gradebook is set up to release grades to students as soon as they become available. In the Grades area of Canvas, instructors can change the Grade Posting Policy to Manually Post Grades for Assignments, Quizzes, and any graded activity in the course. If some assignments already have grades posted (i.e. grades are visible to students), there is no way to hide those grades after the fact.
Changing the Grade Posting Policy
- Navigate to your course in Canvas.
- From the left-side course navigation menu, select Grades.
- In Grades, select the cog wheel icon in the top right corner.
- In the side pop-up, select the Grade Posting Policy tab.
- Select the radio button to the left of “Manually Post Grades”.
- Select Apply Settings. Once applied any graded activity that does not yet have student submissions attached to it will require the instructor to manually post grades. Once grades are entered, students cannot see their grades for assignments until the instructor releases them.
Release Grades to Students
Once students have submitted to the Assignment and all submissions have been graded, instructors will need to Post Grades.
- Navigate to your course in Canvas.
- From the left-side course navigation menu, select Grades.
- In the Gradebook, find the column representing the assignment needing grades to be posted. Hover over the Assignment Name, then select the three vertical dots that will appear on the right.
- From the drop-down menu, select Post grades.
The students will receive an email letting them know that they have been graded for this assignment.
