Canvas studio provides two main ways of adding captions to videos: automatically generated and via text file upload.
Table of contents
Request automatically generated captions
After uploading a video to Canvas Studio you can request that captions be generated. The process will take some time depending on how long the video is and requires you verify the captions for correctness before they are published to viewers.
- Navigate to Canvas Studio in the global navigation bar of Canvas
- Select the video where you want to add captions from your library
- Select the Captions tab
- Select Request
- From the Language drop down menu, select the primary language spoken in the video, then select Request
- The captions will be generated in the background and the status will show Processing. You can navigate away and do other things while this is working. Canvas will send you an email when the captions are ready.
- When the captions are ready, navigate back to the video. In the Captions tab, the captions will show up in the list at the bottom with a status of Not published. From the three dots menu, select Review and publish
- The caption editor screen is divided into two parts, a video player on the right and the list of captions and timestamps on the left. Clicking on a caption on the left will open that caption up for editing.
- When you are finished reviewing the captions, select Publish in the upper right corner.
Note: While the automatically generated captions are fairly accurate, they are not always 100% correct, especially when using domain-specific vocabulary, proper names, or words in languages other than the language you selected as the primary language. It is highly recommended to always review your captions before you publish them.
Upload captions as a text file
If your videos already have captions generated from another source, such as a Zoom download with caption file, you can upload the caption file into Canvas studio.
- Navigate to Canvas Studio in the global navigation bar of Canvas
- Select the video where you want to add captions from your library
- Select the Captions tab
- Select Upload
- From the Language drop down menu, select the primary language spoken in the video, then select Upload
- Select text file containing the captions. If downloaded from Zoom, the file you want to use is the .vtt file
The captions will be attached to the video.
